Work Continues at St. Anthony's Charitable Project
The Doctors, Nurses, and Staff at St. Anthony's Hospital hosted a thank you luncheon
at LaVita Restaurant in August for the JATC School, PDC14 Officials, and Board Members

Last Summer, the JATC Apprentice School embarked upon an ambitious project at St.
Anthony’s Hospital in Chicago.
Work is also under way on some very creative graphic murals for the younger patients at St. Anthony's to admire and enjoy while they get well. While new |
ceilings and flooring are being installed by the other trades, our JATC Apprentices are hard at work designing the murals and painting them on canvas for later installation at the hospital. In Phase I, 15 rooms were prepared and painted. Phase II will involve removing 1700 square feet of vinyl and painting the walls doors, handrails, and trim. It is projected to take up to three weeks. The Industry Advancement Fund donated $5,000.00 to the St. Anthony's project, and Associate members have been generous with donations of materials and tools. |

Apprentice Graduation

The Chicago Area Painting, Decorating, and Drywall Finishing Apprenticeship School conducted its first joint Graduation ceremony on Friday, October 20, 2006, at the Holiday Inn in Hillside. Graduates of the program included 121 Painters and Drywall Finishers, accompanied by their friends and family members to the dinner event. Remarks were delivered by JATC Chairman Jeff Castles (Ascher Brothers Company) and DFTC Chairman Joe Feldner (McNulty Brothers), as well as JATC Apprentice Training Coordinator Jim Watte and DFTC Training Coordinator Ed Bogdan. Greetings and fatherly advice were rendered by Painters District Council No. 14 Secretary-Treasurer Terry Fitzmaurice, while a rousing Keynote Address was delivered by Jimmy Williams, General President of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades.

Congress passed the Secure Fence Act of 2006 (H.R. 6061) that will establish operational
control over the international land and maritime borders of the U.S. Among its many
measures, this bill authorizes over 700 miles of fencing at the U.S.-Mexican border.
The bill will be sent to the President Bush for his signature. The FCA supports
legislation that protects U.S. citizens from border threats.

Gilda's Club in Chicago, a safe haven for cancer patients, received a much-appreciated “Extreme Makeover” in September, thanks to the generosity of our PDCA Associates Group and a crack team of painters dispatched by the Industry Advancement Fund. Professional designers showcased their donated talents by reinventing five group rooms at Gilda's Club…transforming the spaces with dynamic, creative schemes for new wallcoverings, carpeting, lighting, furniture and accessories. The five “Extreme Makeovers” generated newly comfortable and thoughtful meeting spaces for member support activities benefiting men, women, and children whose lives have been touched by cancer. The project involved a collaboration embracing the Hospitality Industry Network (NEWH); Designs for Dignity; five designer teams led by firms including Susan Fredman & Associates, The “I” Team, Gettys, Gensler, and Goettsch Partners; the Chicago Painting & Decorating Contractors Industry Advancement & Promotional Fund; and the Chicago PDCA Associates Group. Each design team created a unique and calming design for one of the five rooms. Then, tradesmen from The Levy Company (Robert Mores and Steve Sellers) and J. M. Brennan & Company (John Clifford) moved in to execute the plan, expending a total of 90 man hours of effort. Walls, door frames, baseboards, and trim were prepared and painted using seven gallons of paint in soothing colors. Over 130 yards of vinyl wallcoverings were installed on selected walls, after applying Muralo 8900 wall primer. Three gallons of wall primer and fifteen gallons of wallpaper paste were consumed in the process. All paints and primers were provided by Benjamin Moore, with D.L. furnishing the wallcovering products. One wall in the “meditation room” received a special digital mural, donated by D.L. Couch. “Thanks to the gifts of time, materials and - especially - the ideas and energy generated by the designers, contractors, and vendors who contributed to the Extreme Makeover, we now have a much more appealing environment for our activities,” observes Laura Jane Hyde, Executive Director of Gilda's Club/Chicago. “Our rooms have been used heavily for the past eight years, so when the design community offered to provide this generous gift, we jumped at the chance. We provide support to individuals facing a tremendous challenge, and having a comfortable, soothing space for meetings helps make that easier.” Gilda's Club Chicago has over 4,500 members. It conducts 15 weekly group meetings plus two bi-monthly group meetings and twelve monthly group meetings for its members…all of which take place in the reinvigorated group rooms. Each of the five newly-decorated rooms seat up to 12 people. Chicago PDCA Associates Caron Christy (Koroseal Mid-West), president of the Chicago Chapter of NEWH and Beth Stack (D.L. Couch Wallcovering) contributed their time and efforts to the organization of the event and procurement of materials donations. Jim Gasparro (Benjamin Moore & Company) helped furnish needed painting materials. And the labor/management painting and decorating effort was coordinated by Marty Tew (J. M. Brennan & Company) and Fred Levy (The Levy Company). An official ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on October 5, 2006, to celebrate the culmination of this vast volunteer effort for a worthy project…and there wasn't a dry eye in the audience. |

The Meditation Room received 2 coats of a “pale sea mist” Regal Aquavelvet latex eggshell enamel on three walls with a D. L. Couch digital mural being applied to the feature wall, creating a very soothing and relaxed atmosphere. |
A new chair rail was installed in this serenely-hued meeting room where the upper walls were painted using two coats of Benjamin Moore Regal Matte. The wood baseboard, chair rail, and doorframe received two coats of Regal Aquaglo semigloss enamel, and the lower wall area was covered with 15 yards of vinyl wallcovering, donated by MDC, that coordinated beautifully with the walls above. |
This comfortable meeting room features some 47 yards of MDC wallcovering installed on all four walls, with baseboards, window sashes, trim, and door frames receiving two coats of semigloss enamel.

In this tranquil room, 30 yards of Maharam-donated vinyl wallcovering were installed on three walls, and the fourth was painted with two coats of a color to complement the wallcovering. |
In this inviting meeting room, 42 yards of Koroseal-donated wallcovering in a neutral hue were installed on all four elevations. Baseboards, window sashes, trim, and doorframes were painted in a dark “Black Bean Soup” shade of semigloss enamel.

The Finishing Contractors Association and the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades have joined forces to address their constituencies with rallying messages that are nothing short of a call to arms. The FCA-produced disk is being mailed to Union Painting Contractors across the land who belong to FCA. It features FCA Chairman Ed Zaucha talking straight and pulling no punches about the Association's plans for recapturing lost markets and countering the non-Union competition. The IUPAT-produced DVD is being mailed to every member of the Union in the United States and Canada. It features IUPAT General President Jim Williams laying out the cards for his membership in no uncertain terms…recognizing the challenging times the Union finds itself in, and outlining a bold new plan for survival. Called the “Top Workforce Performance Plan,” IUPAT's program sets forth a new “three strikes and you're out” policy for weeding out the |

JATC FACULTY WELCOMES NEW INSTRUCTORHector Hernandez has joined the staff of the JATC Apprentice School, where he will be teaching first-year Apprentices brush & roll and basic surface preparation techniques. A swing stage specialist with 23 years of field experience, Hector previously worked for M. Ecker & Company. He completed his own apprenticeship at Washburne Trade School, graduating in 1987 as Apprentice of the Year with the Perfect Attendance Award. Upon joining the JATC faculty, he immediately helped produce the recent Charitable Painting Project for Habitat for Humanity. |
